Reflection #3- Gandhi: Hindu and Activist

Reflection #3- Gandhi: Hindu and Activist

Gandhi was Hindu, and Hindu is polytheistic. This is one of the Gandhi’s ideas of Hinduism. It means that he accepts everything. In the movie, there is a scene where Gandhi says he is a Hindu, a Muslim, a Christian and a Jew. For him, it does not matter if one is a Muslim or a Christian or a Jew because it is not the most important point. In addition, Gandhi wanted to make India where all people from different religions and castes can live together. One of his ideas which he thought to make this happen is to make Jinnah a president of India. Since that was Gandhi’s ideal world, he depressed when he knew that his desire would not come true. However, he strongly believed that everyone has to be accepted and equal and he fought for it by persuading people into his idea, and not by force.
One of the significant quotes which exemplifies the way Gandhi live out his faith is “An eye for an eye ends up making the whole world blind.” It simply means that revenge won’t solve any problems but causes more suffering. In the movie “Gandhi”, we can see some example actions Gandhi took. The first example is the Gandhi’s idea of nonviolence. At the time Gandhi lived, India was under British control. Since British had an enormous military power, there was no way for Indian people to achieve independence. However, Gandhi decided to start a nonviolence protest campaign. Gandhi did not use power against power. The second example is the scene from the movie where Gandhi fasts in order to stop the rebellion between Hindus and Muslims. He did not force them to stop fighting but he made them to stop by fasting instead. The last example is what Gandhi told to a Hindu man who killed a Muslim child. The man killed the child because the child has killed the man’s son. This action he took is revenge. However, his action caused him suffer more. Then, Gandhi told one way to be saved which is to find a child whose parents has been killed and raise him as a Muslim. Through his life, he had taught people who kept doing revenge the better and wise way to solve problems.
